Google AI Mode Checkout for Shopify: Setup and Tracking
Check Shopify Google AI Mode checkout eligibility, inspect the saved setting, diagnose a missing Buy button for one purchase, and understand AI-attributed orders versus GA4. Includes a merchant launch checklist and interactive worksheets.
Yes, eligible U.S.-based Shopify stores selling to U.S. customers can participate in a Shopify-powered direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini. Eligible standard-plan stores may have the feature on by default, but access is still rolling out to stores and shoppers. A merchant can switch direct checkout off and still allow eligible products to be discovered through Google Merchant Center, with buyers redirected to the store to pay. Check Shopify's current eligibility and rollout guidance.
Verified against Shopify's Google channel documentation on September 23, 2026. Shopify controls eligibility and rollout; a completed checklist does not guarantee shopper access.
Google AI Mode checkout vs product discovery
Google can surface eligible merchant listings to shoppers exploring products through AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify direct checkout is a separate purchasing option: when it is available and enabled, the customer can complete a Shopify-powered purchase without visiting the merchant's normal storefront checkout. If direct checkout is off or unavailable, discovery can still lead to a purchase on the merchant's website. Source: Shopify channel guide.
Direct checkout available
Shopper finds an eligible product in Google AI Mode or Gemini → chooses Buy → completes a Shopify-powered checkout within the AI experience → order is available in Shopify with its channel attribution.
Storefront checkout instead
Shopper finds a product in the AI experience → opens the merchant's website → completes the normal onsite purchase flow. This path is relevant when direct checkout is disabled, unavailable, or not supported for that purchase.
SEO implication: Fixing a Merchant Center product-data issue could improve listing accuracy, but it does not automatically activate in-chat checkout. Likewise, disabling direct checkout does not by itself remove eligible products from Google shopping discovery. For product-level AI visibility, use our Merchant Center AI Performance Insights guide; it covers a different task from this checkout and order-tracking guide.
Eligible product data appears in a Google shopping experience; placement is not guaranteed.
Where supported and enabled, purchase completes in the AI experience through Shopify-powered checkout.
When off or unavailable, the shopper follows a merchant website link to complete the purchase.

Is your Shopify store eligible for Google AI checkout?
Shopify's documented conditions include a U.S.-based store selling to U.S. customers, a valid and compliant Google Merchant Center account, eligible products available in Merchant Center and Shopify Catalog, accepted Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms, and completed store policies. The merchant's Google product feed must remain accurate and current. Review the official requirements.
| Check | Where to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Store and customer region | Shopify business details, markets, and intended buyer location | Documented direct checkout availability is U.S. store → U.S. buyer. |
| Merchant Center | Google & YouTube sales channel or connected Merchant Center | Google uses Merchant Center for product discovery and required product data. |
| Product feed | Correct prices, stock, shipping, and products accepted into Merchant Center | Inconsistent product details can prevent an accurate shopping experience. |
| Shopify Catalog | Product eligibility in Shopify | Shopify lists Catalog eligibility as a direct-checkout condition. |
| Terms and policies | Agentic Storefronts terms; Settings → Policies | Terms of service, privacy, returns and refunds must be completed. |
| Channel availability | Sales channels → Agentic | Eligibility does not establish that rollout has reached the store or buyer. |
A Merchant Center feed should agree with the actual product landing page. Our product-page SEO guide explains how to check titles, variants and customer-facing details; it does not replace Shopify’s checkout requirements.
If you use the Google & YouTube channel, Shopify instructs merchants to keep automatic product and shipping synchronization enabled. A merchant using a supported third-party feed or manual Merchant Center upload does not need to install that Shopify channel solely to use an already connected Merchant Center feed. See Shopify's feed options.
How to enable or disable Google AI Mode checkout in Shopify
Do not assume that you need to turn the feature on. Shopify documents that direct checkout is active by default for eligible standard-plan stores, while stores on its separate Agentic plan have direct selling off by default and must complete additional setup.
Open the Agentic section
Sign in as the store owner or a staff member with Products → View and Sales channels → Agentic permissions. Open Sales channels → Agentic.
Switch to manual channel management if needed
If you want to control Google independently, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me. Be aware that changing this setting also changes automatic management of agentic storefronts; review the other channel settings rather than treating it as a Google-only switch.
Select Google AI Mode and Gemini
Find the Google channel, inspect whether your store is eligible, and review the current Direct checkout setting.
Choose where the customer buys
Turn Direct checkout on to permit in-chat purchasing where available, or off to direct buyers to your online store for checkout. Select Save and confirm the setting persisted.
Turning off “Allow Shopify to manage for me” unlocks individual channel controls. If you later switch automatic management back on, Shopify may reactivate available channels and direct-checkout behavior. Confirm the saved Google setting and the state of any other channels that matter to your store. Shopify's management guide.
Shopify admin → Sales channels → Agentic. Confirm owner or appropriate staff permission.
Turn off automatic management only if you intend to manage individual channels; select Google AI Mode and Gemini.
Choose Direct checkout on or off, save, then re-open the setting to confirm the intended state.

How to verify the change in your own account
Note whether “Allow Shopify to manage for me” is on, which Shopify plan you use, and whether Google AI Mode and Gemini appears. A missing channel is not proof of ineligibility.
Switch to manual management only if you intend to review individual channels. Check Google’s Direct checkout setting and the other agentic channel controls before saving.
Return to the channel screen to confirm the setting persisted. If the option is absent, record “not available in account” rather than claiming it was enabled or disabled.
Follow Shopify's current control instructions and the permissions and global-management notes.
4. Interactive Google AI checkout readiness audit
Answer for one store and one intended purchase. The tool separates merchant, channel, product, fulfillment and rollout questions; it does not log in, send answers, or certify eligibility.
Printable fallback: six checks
- Verify U.S. store and buyer location, Merchant Center compliance, product and Shopify Catalog eligibility.
- Confirm accepted Agentic terms and published terms of service, privacy, and return/refund policies.
- Identify your Shopify plan, staff permissions, channel availability and actual saved checkout setting.
- Check the particular product for unsupported subscriptions, bundles, customization or B2B-only purchases.
- Check whether delivery, required sign-in or critical checkout blocks make this particular flow incompatible.
- Confirm actual rollout for the product and shopper separately; eligibility alone never guarantees a Buy button.
- For AI Mode in Search, review the published shopper conditions: a signed-in user aged 18 or older in the U.S. using English. Do not request or store an individual shopper’s private account information; other Google shopping surfaces may have different conditions.
- For the separate Agentic plan, verify business setup and payments, shipping rates and taxes before activating direct checkout. Review legal disclosures within the first 6,000 product-description characters and any critical checkout consent or input dependencies.
A failed condition should be investigated individually. An unsupported item does not establish that all other products in the store are unsupported. Official Google channel requirements.
The interactive questionnaire loads only when JavaScript is available. The complete printable checklist above remains available at all times.
Store, account and shopper
Product, fulfillment and purchase requirements
Saved checkout setting and observed availability
“Not sure” is never treated as passing. Completing every check does not certify eligibility, rollout, product visibility or actual purchase availability.
Worked readiness scenario: a purchase requiring local delivery
For the example, assume a fictional U.S. store and U.S. shopper. The product is a normal eligible item, but this particular order requires local delivery, which Shopify lists as unsupported for the direct checkout. This example verifies the guide's decision process, not a real account's eligibility or a live Google checkout.
Reader action: Select “Load sample purchase” in the tool above, then choose “Review my answers.” For a real store, return the dropdowns to your own observed settings and use “Reset answers” when finished.
Verification limit: One unsupported purchase flow does not establish that every item sold by that store is ineligible. Shopify's availability and merchant eligibility must still be checked separately. Official supported-checkout requirements.
Shopify Google AI checkout: purchase-level launch checklist
Use this after the readiness audit. A store-level green check does not establish that one product, shipping method or checkout dependency can complete the intended purchase. Record one product and one route privately; this page does not connect to Shopify or collect order data.
The checklist is visible and printable without JavaScript. Tick only what you personally verified; these checks do not certify rollout or guarantee an actual transaction.
These checks are derived from Shopify’s channel requirements and checkout limitations and the separate Agentic-plan setup instructions. A completed checklist is a documented review, not a platform eligibility certificate or a live checkout test.
Why is the Google AI Buy button missing in Shopify?
Do not diagnose every missing Buy button as an SEO issue. Shopify identifies separate causes involving store and customer eligibility, staged rollout, the product's purchase type, and the checkout or fulfillment method. Check those conditions in order.
Five checks when the Buy button is absent
- Merchant controls: open Shopify Sales channels → Agentic, verify the Google channel appears, and inspect the saved Direct checkout state and account permissions.
- Product and order: review Merchant Center feed acceptance, inventory, product type, fulfillment choice, and any required checkout app/consent.
- Consumer surface: for AI Mode in Google Search, Google documents a signed-in user aged 18+ in the U.S. using English. Google’s consumer conditions also mention product restrictions. Do not apply these exact consumer rules automatically to every Gemini experience.
- Availability: confirm whether the account and shopper are included in the ongoing rollout. Merchant readiness is not a guarantee that Google displays an offer or Buy button.
- Observed result: note the actual product, intended shipping route, shopping surface and date. If the setting remains absent despite completed documented requirements, contact Shopify support with non-sensitive diagnostic details.
| Purchase requirement | Documented limitation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription, bundle, customizable item, or B2B-only product | Not supported for this direct-checkout flow. | Determine whether the item is genuinely a supported one-time purchase. |
| Local delivery, in-store pickup, or pickup point | Not supported delivery methods. | Review which shipping methods the order actually requires. |
| Mandatory customer sign-in | Checkout cannot require a customer account sign-in. | Confirm the buyer can complete the purchase without the required login. |
| Checkout app blocks or custom fields | Some blocks will not display, even when essential to your normal storefront process. | Identify anything that must collect data, modify the cart, or block checkout. |
| Client-side analytics and pixels | Standard Google Analytics and custom browser pixels do not fire inside this checkout. | Use channel/order reporting and inspect supported server-side instrumentation. |
Before enabling direct checkout: product disclosures and checkout dependencies
Shopify instructs merchants to put relevant legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters of the product description. Review the full product description and applicable product-specific requirements rather than assuming a disclosure displayed only in a checkout block will appear during Google direct checkout.
Some blocks for consent, custom fields, loyalty, cart edits, customer validation, or messages may not load. Shopify supports relevant shipping, discount and cart/checkout validation Functions; that is not a guarantee that every corresponding visual checkout block will render. If an essential requirement cannot be met in the supported direct purchase experience, resolve the dependency and consider your normal website checkout instead. Source: Shopify checkout limitations.
Shopify notes that supported discounts and certain Shopify Functions can run, but you should not generalize that to every theme, app, or checkout customization. If the store depends on a feature that cannot work inside direct checkout, consider routing customers to the normal storefront instead. Official feature-support list.
What if your products are discoverable but not purchasable in-chat?
That outcome is possible: product discovery and direct checkout have different controls and eligibility. Verify the buyer's region, store eligibility, channel setting, the product type, and whether the feature has reached that shopper. A positive result in Shopify's product-discovery preview is not a promise of identical placement in Google's actual AI interface. Shopify's preview limitations.
For consistent product identifiers, price and availability information on your storefront, see our product structured-data guide. Product markup can support accurate descriptions of an item, but it does not override checkout compatibility or rollout restrictions.
How to track Google AI Mode checkout orders in Shopify
Open Sales channels → Agentic in Shopify. Use the reporting dropdown to inspect Sales, Orders, Online store sessions, and Online store conversions for the relevant channel and reporting period. Shopify's sales metric aggregates referral-based sales and sales completed through direct checkout; its online-store sessions measure visits to your actual store. Official reporting definitions and navigation.
What did the channel attribute?
Inspect orders and sales attributed to the Google channel. Confirm order details and the reporting period before making business decisions.
What did the website observe?
GA4 and other browser-side tags describe the interactions they actually received. An off-site direct checkout does not necessarily generate a normal storefront session or client-side purchase event.
September 2026 reporting change: establish a new session baseline
Shopify's session-measurement update rolls out September 21–23, 2026. It changes session boundaries, includes some sessions without pageviews, and filters identified bot sessions in supported reports by default. Session totals and session-based conversion rates may move without a corresponding change in orders or actual customer behavior. When comparing reports across this date, document the measurement change and use a comparable post-update baseline. Official September session-update guidance.
Shopify reports a purchase with channel attribution. Check the actual order and purchase path.
Shopper may complete checkout inside Google's AI experience; ordinary client-side website pixels do not run there.
Shopper visits the store and completes its standard checkout, where site analytics may record events subject to consent and setup.
Original conceptual measurement diagram. Paths and event collection must be confirmed in the merchant's actual reporting setup.
Reproduce the reporting check in your own Shopify store
In Sales channels → Agentic, select the relevant AI channel and one date range. Record the time zone and whether the view shows Sales, Orders, or Online store sessions.
Privately capture the reporting labels and filters, then inspect accessible orders to confirm their recorded purchase paths where the merchant's data allows. Do not share order IDs, customer details, or revenue without authorization.
Apply the same relevant date range and review GA4's attribution, consent, and actual server-side integrations. Do not infer a direct-checkout count by subtracting GA4 purchases from all Shopify AI-attributed orders.
Reporting definitions: Shopify Agentic analytics. For broader website visibility and AI-search traffic context, read our Google AI Mode SEO and traffic guide; off-site direct checkout requires its own purchase-path analysis.
8. AI checkout order-reporting reconciliation worksheet
Compare one AI channel and a consistent date range only after checking the purchase path and measurement definitions. No Shopify or GA4 data leaves this page.
12 Shopify AI-attributed orders · 4 AI-attributed website sessions · 2 GA4 purchases
These three figures are not a single conversion funnel. Shopify channel orders can include purchases completed directly in the AI experience and referred website purchases. GA4's normal client-side checkout events do not run inside off-site direct checkout. The numerical difference is not a count of missing orders or proof of lost revenue.
Checkout event limitations · Shopify channel-report definitions.
Three possible observations, three different next actions
- Shopify order exists but no normal GA4 purchase event: check the actual purchase path. Client-side GA4 pixels do not run in the documented off-site direct checkout; do not call a verified Shopify order a lost sale.
- Both systems show purchases but attribute them differently: review channel, dates, time zone, consent and attribution rules; only compare transaction identities where authorized records and stable identifiers permit.
- Shopper reports a purchase but no completed Shopify order is found: inspect authorized order records, payment status and support information before describing a completed or lost transaction.
These interpretations do not establish the cause for your store. Avoid sending additional GA4 purchase events without reviewing identifiers, consent and deduplication with a qualified implementer.
Printable reconciliation checks
- Are reporting dates, timezone, currency and selected channel aligned?
- Are you comparing attributed sales/orders with onsite sessions, which have different scopes?
- Have you inspected actual orders and differentiated purchase paths where Shopify's records allow?
- Have you reviewed GA4 attribution, consent and actual browser-side or server-side event setup?
- Does the period cross Shopify's September 21–23, 2026 session-measurement change?
- Have you recorded findings without inventing a channel-wide conversion rate or missing-order count?
JavaScript is needed only for the optional numeric interpretation. The worked example and reconciliation checklist remain visible without it.
Worked example: why 12 AI orders need not mean 12 website checkouts
The fictional counts above have different scopes. Load them into the worksheet, review its three observation types, and inspect actual merchant records before interpreting a mismatch. Do not subtract GA4 purchases from Shopify channel orders and call the result lost revenue.
Google AI Mode checkout troubleshooting and FAQs
Google AI Mode and Gemini does not appear in my Shopify admin. Why?
Check whether you have access to Sales channels → Agentic, the relevant staff permissions, and the required store setup. Shopify says the Google channel is rolling out; qualifying in principle does not mean it is already available to your account. If the channel is still missing after checking the published requirements, contact Shopify support with your store details. Eligibility guidance.
Will turning off direct checkout remove my products from Google AI Mode?
No, not by itself. Shopify says eligible listings can continue to be discovered through Merchant Center; shoppers are instead sent to the merchant's website to purchase. Product removal and Merchant Center feed changes are separate decisions. Shopify's direct-checkout controls.
Why does a shopper who is in the U.S. still see no Buy button?
Check the five-step diagnostic above: the saved merchant setting, product and delivery restrictions, rollout, and which Google surface is being used. For AI Mode in Search, Google’s consumer guide also specifies a signed-in adult user in the U.S. using English. Do not assume the same exact conditions apply to Gemini or solicit another shopper’s private account information.
Do I need to build a custom Universal Commerce Protocol integration?
Not simply to use Shopify's documented Google channel path. A separate custom UCP implementation is a different technical project; follow the Shopify channel guide for standard Shopify merchant controls. Shopify setup documentation.
Does using direct checkout guarantee sales or rankings?
No. It changes the supported purchase path; Google still determines which products appear for a given shopping query. Accurate feeds and compliant product information matter, but neither checkout activation nor this guide guarantees AI placements or orders.
Why is my GA4 purchase count lower than Shopify AI-channel orders?
First confirm that both reports refer to the same channel, period, and attribution scope. Shopify's direct checkout does not fire standard browser-side GA4 pixels, so normal website purchase events may not represent every AI-channel order. Examine Shopify's orders and any existing server-side measurement before diagnosing lost data. Shopify's direct-checkout analytics limitation.
Does completing every check mean Google must show Buy?
No. Shopper availability, eligible offers, the Google surface, and rollout remain separate. The checklists document what you reviewed, not a confirmed order. Shopify’s rollout note.
What to do next
Start with the readiness audit above. Then verify your actual Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout setting in Shopify, inspect one relevant product's type and fulfillment requirements, and establish a post–September 23 baseline for AI-channel orders and website sessions. If the store uses a special checkout app or fulfillment method, confirm compatibility before enabling direct checkout. Where the feature is not available, retain an accurate Merchant Center feed and review the rollout documentation instead of assuming an SEO penalty.
