How much does an SEO audit cost?

Published SEO audit prices range from hundreds to many thousands of US dollars. For example, Neil Patel’s guide places lighter audits at $500–$2,500 and broader strategic reviews at $2,500–$7,500, with enterprise work higher. These are one provider’s categories, not a universal rate card. Compare the scope, evidence, implementation and verification before judging whether a quote is reasonable.

Separate the report fee from the complete budget. A proposal can be fairly priced and still exclude the development, content changes or verification needed to act on it. Get those responsibilities in writing.

1. SEO audit pricing: what the published numbers mean

An automated scan, a focused investigation and an enterprise review can all be sold as an “SEO audit.” Their prices answer different questions. Start with the type of work, then compare the fee. All dollar amounts in this guide are USD unless stated otherwise.

Published pricing evidence checked on 21 October 2026
Source and evidence type Published figure How to interpret it
Neil Patel: provider guidance $500–$2,500 lighter audits; $2,500–$7,500 strategic audits; $10,000–$20,000+ enterprise work One provider’s scope categories, rather than a representative US pricing survey.
WebFX: buyer survey 43% reported paying $101–$750 WebFX describes a survey of 250 US businesses. A spending bracket does not establish what every audit includes.
WebFX: published package From $8,600 per audit A named provider offer. Check its page coverage and support against your requirements.
MediaScaleUp: published starting rate From $3,800 per technical audit A starting offer for that provider’s technical work; the final scope can change the price.

These figures are reference points, not a price survey conducted by SearchCounselCo. They describe different samples and deliverables. The named offers are included to explain pricing, not to rank or endorse those providers.

Another frequently cited source, Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, covers SEO pricing more broadly. Its one-off project fees are not an audit-only benchmark. Keep audit fees, monthly retainers and software subscriptions separate when reading cost guides.

2. What should an SEO audit price include?

First agree on the decision the audit must support. “Tell us why our product pages are not earning visibility” is a clearer brief than “check everything.” A useful proposal names the investigation, its limits and the handover your team will receive.

A buyer’s deliverable checklist
Deliverable What to ask for
Scope and baseline Which domains, markets, templates and business pages are covered? What data period will the auditor use?
Verified findings Affected URLs or templates, the supporting evidence and a reproducible explanation of the issue.
Prioritized roadmap What should happen first, why it matters, estimated effort, dependencies and uncertainty.
Implementation handover Specific tasks for the people doing the work, with responsibilities and acceptance checks.
Review and follow-up A defined walkthrough or clarification process, support period and verification scope.

A technical review can cover crawling, rendering, indexing, site architecture and performance. Our technical SEO audit guide explains those areas. A content audit, local visibility review and backlink investigation answer different questions; include them when they belong in the brief.

Ask what evidence supports an issue. For example, a performance review should explain which Core Web Vitals measurements it used. An indexing finding should distinguish an observed status from its suspected cause; see our guide to diagnosing indexing problems.

3. Why two SEO audit quotes can be far apart

  • Platform and template complexity. A large set of similar product pages can require a different review from a smaller site with custom layouts, filters and rendering behavior. URL count alone does not define the work.
  • Investigation depth. Reviewing a crawl export differs from reproducing issues, examining first-party data and testing explanations. Ask which checks are automated and which findings receive human validation.
  • Markets, languages and site history. Multiple storefronts, migrations and accumulated changes can add work. Request explicit inclusions rather than assuming “comprehensive” covers every property.
  • Data availability. Public pages, Search Console exports, analytics and server logs reveal different things. Missing access can limit conclusions or require a separate investigation.
  • Handover and support. Developer tickets, stakeholder explanations, follow-up questions and post-fix verification need defined time.
  • Delivery arrangements. A rushed deadline, additional review rounds or a specialist requirement can change a proposal. Ask what triggers a revised quote.

Compare the named person and the actual work, not just “agency” versus “freelancer.” A higher fee does not establish quality, and a lower fee does not prove that the work is automated or unsuitable. A sample deliverable and a clear scope are more useful checks.

4. Free versus paid SEO audits: which do you need?

Free software can support useful analysis. Screaming Frog’s pricing page lists a free crawl limit of 500 URLs, with additional features available through its paid licence. That is software access; investigation time and interpretation are separate costs.

A free initial review from a provider may also help identify whether a larger engagement makes sense. Ask what it covers, what evidence it uses and what you can do with the findings. Do not assume it includes the same investigation or support as a separately scoped project.

Pay for professional help when the uncertainty is important enough to justify investigation and your team cannot resolve it efficiently. A paid report should explain the problem, support the conclusion and make the next decision easier. Paying more for a longer issue list is not automatically better value.

5. Compare two SEO audit quotes with this worksheet

Use the same brief for both providers. Fill the fields from their written proposals. If a detail is missing, enter “not stated” and ask for clarification. That is a question to resolve, not proof that a provider omits the work.

Your entries are temporary. Copy the completed comparison into your own document before leaving this page.

Fillable audit proposal comparison
Question to resolve Provider A Provider B
Commercial terms
Price, currency, tax, one-off or recurring billing, quote validity and delivery date.
Coverage
Domains, platforms, languages, markets, crawl coverage and manually reviewed pages or templates.
Access and evidence
Required data, access level, limits without access and evidence supplied with findings.
Analysis and ownership
Who performs the review? What is validated, and what remains a hypothesis?
Roadmap and handover
Priority reasoning, effort estimates, dependencies, sample tasks and acceptance checks.
Implementation
Included work, exclusions, responsible team and any separate estimate.
Verification
What is retested after changes, by whom, when and for what additional fee?
Support and control
Walkthrough, clarification window, revisions, account ownership and document handover.

A proposal is ready to compare when you can identify the requested work, its limits and who will act on the findings. If one quote includes execution and another stops at recommendations, request comparable line items before choosing. Use “needs clarification” where information is missing instead of assigning an invented quality score.

6. Budget for the work after the report

Estimate the audit, implementation and verification separately. Add content, tools, internal time and tax only where they apply and are not already included. An unknown implementation fee is not zero.

Fictional example. The following USD figures are invented to demonstrate the calculation. They are not actual quotes, market averages, client results or SearchCounselCo prices. Assume the same agreed work is being compared.

Illustrative complete-budget comparison
Agreed cost item Proposal A Proposal B
Audit and report $900 $1,600
Implementation allowance $1,800 $900
Post-fix verification $300 Included
Estimated external total $3,000 $2,500

The arithmetic is $900 + $1,800 + $300 = $3,000 for A, and $1,600 + $900 = $2,500 for B. The lower report fee leads to the higher complete budget in this example. That does not establish which provider is better; you still need comparable work and evidence of delivery.

If an implementation allowance changes after diagnosis, record the revised scope and approve it before work begins. When your own developers will make the changes, include their capacity in the plan even if it is not an external invoice. Keep the audit’s value separate from any promised financial return; our guide to whether SEO is worth the investment explains the wider investment decision.

7. What an actionable audit finding should look like

Ask for a sample that shows how an observation becomes a task. The example below is fictional. It demonstrates a deliverable format; no test or client investigation is being claimed.

Fictional sample finding: retired category link
Field Completed example
Context A fictional store, Harbor Trail Goods, has replaced a category URL.
Observed evidence The category navigation still points to /collections/trail-shoes-old/, which returns HTTP 404 in this fictional scenario. The approved replacement is /collections/trail-shoes/.
Affected area The shared category-navigation template. List each affected template instance in the real handover.
Why it matters Visitors following the link reach a missing page. The organic traffic impact has not been quantified.
Task and owner The template developer updates the navigation to the approved live destination after merchandising confirms the category. Any redirect decision is assessed separately.
Acceptance checks Published navigation links point directly to the intended live category; the destination returns the expected successful response; the affected templates are rechecked.
Handover evidence Source-page examples, original and corrected destinations, response evidence and a dated verification note.
Follow-up Record the change and recrawl. Monitor search performance separately; a passed implementation check does not prove ranking or revenue gains.

An actual finding should attach the evidence rather than merely promise it. The sample demonstrates the level of specificity to request. A spreadsheet of flags can be useful input, but it leaves important work unfinished if nobody validates the diagnosis or defines the change.

8. Buy an audit, narrow the scope or wait?

Choose the next step around your situation
Situation Practical buying decision
One clear, isolated problem Consider a focused investigation or fix review before commissioning a broad audit.
Unexplained losses across important pages A scoped audit can help separate possible causes; require a baseline and evidence, not a guaranteed recovery.
A redesign, migration or new market Specify the decision and timing. A pre-launch review and a post-launch verification are different tasks.
An existing audit nobody has implemented Review its quality and execution blockers before buying another report.
No person or budget available for changes Resolve implementation capacity or commission a smaller decision-focused review.

The right engagement is the smallest scope that can responsibly answer your important question. A small website does not automatically need an enterprise review. A complex problem does not become simple just because it affects a small number of pages.

9. Send this scope request before asking for a price

Copy this request and add your site details. Send it to each provider so the replies address the same job.

At the evaluation stage, Google recommends carefully considering the audit scope and granting read-only Search Console access. Keep account ownership and access permissions appropriate to the task. A provider can inspect public pages from a domain, but private search-performance analysis needs authorized access or data you supply.

SEO audit cost: common buying questions

How much should a small business pay for an SEO audit?

Use the published examples above as context, then request a quote for your specific question. A small business may need a focused review or a broader investigation. Confirm the manual work, evidence, handover and exclusions instead of assuming that a business-size label defines the correct price.

How much does a technical SEO audit cost?

Technical audit prices depend on the agreed investigation. Compare the named starting offers above with your site’s templates, rendering, markets and available data. Ask whether implementation and post-fix verification are included. Those published prices are reference offers, not a universal technical-audit rate.

Does an SEO audit include fixing the problems?

Only when the proposal includes that work. Some engagements end at a roadmap; others include implementation or a separate allowance. Identify the person responsible for each change and agree how completion will be verified.

How long should an audit take?

Agree on a delivery date after the scope and access requirements are established. Ask when investigation starts, what information could delay it, and whether the quoted timeline includes your review, revisions and verification. The fastest delivery is useful only if it answers the agreed question.

Is an audit included in a monthly SEO retainer?

Check the agreement. An onboarding review may be included, separately billed or narrower than the standalone audit you need. Compare the initial deliverables and ongoing execution responsibilities before treating a monthly fee as an alternative audit price.

Can an audit guarantee rankings or AI Overview citations?

No. An audit supports decisions; it does not control search results. Google warns against first-place guarantees. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google documents ordinary Search foundations and no special schema requirement. Ask what additional investigation an “AI audit” includes rather than accepting a guaranteed-citation claim.

The one thing to do next

Choose the business question you need answered, then use the comparison worksheet to request a complete scope. Make the report, implementation and verification responsibilities clear before choosing on price.

If technical uncertainty is the issue, start with SearchCounselCo’s free initial technical SEO audit. Share your domain and the problem you want investigated. Public-site observations can come first; analysis of private Search Console data requires authorized access or supplied exports. Any further work should have an agreed scope and quote.
