SEO: the documented foundation

Search engine optimization is the work of making content accessible, understandable, relevant, useful, and competitive in search. It includes technical SEO, content, internal architecture, links, structured data where supported, user experience, and measurement. SEO is broader than “ten blue links”; it already covers multiple search features and formats.

AEO: an industry label for answer visibility

Answer engine optimization usually means making information easy for an answer system to locate, interpret, and present. The term has been used for featured snippets and voice answers, and it is now frequently applied to AI-generated answers. That history is why two people can use “AEO” while describing different surfaces.

The useful part of AEO is not the acronym. It is the editorial discipline: answer the real question early, define important terms, resolve ambiguity, support factual claims, and make the page easy to navigate. Those practices also improve ordinary SEO and user experience.

GEO: an industry and research label for generative visibility

Generative engine optimization focuses on whether a generative system retrieves, synthesizes, mentions, or cites a source. The 2023 paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” formalized a framework and reported visibility gains of up to 40% in its controlled benchmark. That result belongs to the paper’s experiments; it is not a universal performance promise or a published ranking rule for every live engine.

Boundary that matters: SEO is an established discipline. AEO and GEO are useful industry labels, but their definitions are not standardized across platforms, agencies, or tools. Always define the surface and metric before approving an “AEO” or “GEO” project.

What Google actually says about AEO and GEO

Google’s current guide to optimizing for generative AI features removes much of the mystery. It says SEO best practices remain relevant because Google’s generative features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. It also explicitly says that, from Google Search’s perspective, work described as AEO or GEO is still SEO.

Retrieval still depends on the search foundation

Google describes retrieval-augmented generation, where current web pages from the Search index help ground a response, and query fan-out, where a model issues related searches to gather supporting information. That makes broad topical understanding useful, but it does not justify producing a thin page for every possible query variation. Eligibility comes before optimization language

For Google’s generative search features, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or inclusion. This is why a crawl block, canonical conflict, noindex directive, rendering failure, or poor page ownership can defeat both classic SEO and AI-search visibility.

Non-commodity content is the information-gain opportunity

Google’s guidance emphasizes content that offers something beyond a generic summary: original experience, analysis, a distinct point of view, useful media, or evidence that helps the reader decide. Search is changing, but the work is not detached from SEO

The exported query table disclosed 91 impressions, 13 fewer than the page total. That difference is expected when some queries are withheld or table aggregation differs. The visible demand clustered as follows:

The correct diagnosis was not “rewrite the title to improve CTR.” A page with an average position near 78 rarely receives enough prominent exposure for CTR to be the main constraint. The stronger sequence was to give the URL clear ownership of the three-way comparison, reduce overlap with related pages, add non-commodity evidence, strengthen contextual internal links, and then reassess query movement.

This example also shows why average position is directional. Google defines it as an average of the topmost result for the selected grouping, while real results vary by time, place, device, and search history. How to measure SEO, AEO, and GEO without mixing the evidence

There is no single, complete “AI visibility score” for the web. Engines expose different data, citations can change between runs, and prompt samples are not equivalent to population-level search demand. Build a reporting layer that keeps documented platform data separate from third-party estimates and manual observations.

A unified SEO, AEO, and GEO workflow

1. Confirm eligibility and controls

Check status codes, indexability, canonicals, robots directives, rendered content, sitemap discovery, snippet eligibility, and relevant platform crawlers. Do this before changing copy. A system cannot reliably retrieve a page it cannot access or select.

2. Assign one search intent to one owner

Choose the URL that should own the primary task. Map close variants to the same page when they seek the same answer. Keep separate pages only when the intent, audience, or required outcome is materially different.

3. Put the direct answer before the expansion

Give the reader a concise answer, then explain definitions, caveats, evidence, alternatives, and decisions. A short answer is an entry point, not the entire content strategy.

4. Add something a generic summary cannot replace

Use first-party data, a worked example, screenshots, original research, decision criteria, a calculator, a tested process, or expert interpretation. If every paragraph can be reconstructed from the same five ranking pages, the content has little reason to become the preferred source.

5. Make factual claims auditable

Link volatile claims to current primary documentation. State whether a point is platform documentation, first-party observation, a controlled study, or an inference. Never turn a correlation or benchmark result into an alleged ranking factor.

6. Strengthen site and entity context

Add contextual internal links from pages that already discuss the topic. Keep organization, author, product, service, and location facts consistent on the site and on authoritative external profiles. Use structured data that truthfully represents visible content and is supported for the relevant search feature.

7. Measure each output separately

Track classic organic discovery, Google generative performance, Bing citations, ChatGPT referrals, lead quality, and conversions in separate views. A rise in citations with no referral traffic may still create brand exposure, but it is not the same result as qualified visits or sales.

8. Iterate from the diagnosis

If impressions rise but rankings remain weak, improve relevance and authority. If rankings rise but CTR stays weak, inspect the live result and snippet. If classic search performs but generative citations do not, examine source value, answer clarity, entity consistency, and engine-specific controls. Change one causal layer at a time where practical.

Six AEO and GEO claims to treat carefully

Myth 1: AEO and GEO are separate Google ranking systems

Google says its generative features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems and treats optimization for those experiences as SEO. Other platforms may use different retrieval systems and controls, so define the engine before prescribing work.

Myth 2: An llms.txt file improves Google AI visibility

Google’s 2026 guidance says it does not use llms.txt or other special AI text files. Maintaining one for another service that supports it is a platform decision, not a Google ranking tactic.

Myth 3: Content must be broken into tiny chunks for AI

Clear structure helps people navigate and helps systems locate relevant passages. However, Google explicitly says there is no requirement to divide content into tiny pieces and no ideal page length. Structure the page around the reader’s task.

Myth 4: Special schema guarantees AI citations

Google says no special schema is required for generative search. Supported structured data can clarify eligible search features when it matches visible content, but it does not guarantee a rich result, rank, or AI citation.

Myth 5: FAQ schema is a shortcut to more Google visibility

Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026 and later removed the feature documentation. Keep useful visible FAQs for readers, but do not justify them with a rich-result promise.

Myth 6: Allowing an AI crawler guarantees inclusion

Allowing a relevant crawler removes an access barrier. It does not force retrieval, selection, mention, citation, or referral. Content quality, relevance, source selection, and the user’s prompt still matter.

How to stop SEO, AEO, and GEO pages from competing with each other

The acronym boom encourages sites to publish many nearly identical pages: “SEO vs AEO,” “AEO vs GEO,” “SEO vs GEO,” “AI SEO,” and four-way variations. If those pages answer the same task, they can split internal links, external signals, and relevance instead of building ownership.

  1. Build a query-to-page map. Export queries by page from Search Console and group them by user task, not exact wording.
  2. Compare the live SERPs. If two query sets return substantially similar results and require the same answer, one owner page is often stronger.
  3. Inspect actual body intent. Titles can differ while the article bodies remain duplicates. Compare headings, examples, decision assets, and conversion paths.
