Google’s Search Status Dashboard records the August spam update from August 18 at 09:27 Pacific time to August 21 at 01:49 Pacific time. The rollout lasted two days and 16 hours. Google described it as global and applicable to all languages.
This was a spam update, not a core update and not a manual action. Google describes spam updates as notable improvements to its automated systems for detecting search spam. SpamBrain is one example of an AI-based spam-prevention system, but Google did not announce a new SpamBrain version or identify a particular subsystem for the August rollout. Did the August spam update hit rankings harder than normal?
One large third-party analysis found substantially more severe top-10 losses than in its comparison period. Search Engine Land reported that SE Ranking analyzed the same 100,000 U.S. organic keywords across 20 industries. It compared rankings from August 17 and August 22 with a baseline comparison from July 26 and July 31, when Google had no confirmed ranking update.

The limits matter as much as the headline. The analysis tracked positions one through 100. A URL that left the top 100 could have been deindexed, moved to position 140, or been replaced after the query’s result set changed. SE Ranking did not conduct a domain-level or page-quality review of the losers and winners. The data therefore shows exceptional displacement in the sample; it does not identify a classifier, a policy violation or a cause for an individual site.
Use the study as a reason to investigate, not as a verdict. A loss around August 18–21 is consistent with the update window. Your own page, query, country, device, search-type, technical and conversion evidence must determine whether the update is the best explanation.
Did the spam update cause your ranking or traffic drop?
Timing creates a candidate cause; it does not prove one. A decline that began before August 18 cannot have been caused by an update that had not started. A decline during or after the rollout deserves investigation, but indexing failures, releases, reporting anomalies, changed demand, new SERP features and stronger competitors remain plausible.

A worked diagnosis example
The following numbers are fictional and demonstrate the method. Suppose 60 editorial URLs lose 32% of impressions after August 21. Product and service pages stay stable. Among the editorial group, 46 losing URLs share one thin template and rely on substantially similar source summaries. Fourteen original research articles remain stable.
That pattern supports an investigation into the shared editorial process. It does not prove a penalty or reveal a specific Google classifier. The sensible response is to sample the 46 pages, check their index and query ownership, compare them with the 14 stable controls, and decide which pages should be improved, merged or removed. A sitewide rewrite would destroy the control group and create many new variables.
Build a clean Search Console comparison
Do not use August 13–17 Generative AI impressions as the clean baseline for this update. Google’s Data Anomalies page records a logging problem that reduced impressions in the Generative AI performance report for those dates. Google describes it as a reporting issue, not a visibility loss.

Export before changing the site
- Record the Search Console property, search type, timezone, country, device and search-appearance filters.
- Export page and query data for identical complete windows.
- Keep clicks, impressions, CTR and average position in both files.
- Save a deployment log covering templates, redirects, content batches, tracking, server incidents and security events.
- Create affected, stable and winning URL groups before calculating a sitewide average.
- Repeat the comparison by page, query, country, device and search type.
- Keep the raw export unchanged and perform calculations in a working copy.

Search Console clicks and analytics sessions are not identical measurements. Search Console records activity in Google Search, while analytics measures activity after a website or app is reached. Use both, but keep their scopes separate.
A seven-step post-rollout diagnosis
Run these steps in order and preserve the raw evidence. Every uncontrolled change made during diagnosis creates another possible cause.
1. Put Google events and site changes on one timeline
Use August 18 at 09:27 Pacific as the start and August 21 at 01:49 Pacific as completion. Add CMS releases, migrations, redirects, template edits, content batches, tracking changes, security incidents and server problems. Normalize everything to one timezone.
2. Check Manual Actions and Security Issues
A manual action follows human review and appears in Search Console. An automated change does not. If a notice exists, follow the named issue and example URLs. If no notice exists, do not submit a reconsideration request for an automated ranking movement.
3. Exclude crawling, indexing and rendering failures
Check response codes, robots directives, canonicals, redirects, Page Indexing, URL Inspection, rendered HTML, server availability and recent releases. If one template or folder disappeared together, a technical SEO diagnosis may be more urgent than a content rewrite.
4. Create affected, stable and winning controls
Group URLs by their real job and production pattern: services, categories, products, editorial guides, location pages, programmatic pages, forums and third-party sections. Keep the stable pages and winners. They show which patterns survived and prevent a few visible losses from becoming an unsupported sitewide story.
5. Reverse the page-to-query analysis
Filter each losing page and inspect its query groups. Then filter each important query and inspect which URL now receives impressions. Look for owner swapping, intent mismatch, duplication, changed demand, new competitors and new SERP formats. Average position is an aggregate, not a fixed live rank.
6. Find the shared production or policy pattern
Ask what the losing group shares that the controls do not: copied or stitched sources, unclear query ownership, doorway intent, third-party publishing, misleading functionality, aggressive anchors, expired-domain history, hacked content or scaled output with little added value. An evidence-led content audit should connect every suspected pattern to URL examples, ownership and a correction plan.
7. Choose the smallest action that fits the evidence
Fix verified security and technical defects immediately. Improve pages with a distinct reader job. Merge pages competing for the same intent. Remove or block hacked, deceptive or indefensible content. Do not rewrite an entire site, delete useful sections or upload a disavow file because one graph changed.

Audit spam-policy exposure by URL pattern
Do not reduce a website to one vague quality score. Connect a published policy category to a reproducible URL pattern, specific examples, business ownership and an appropriate response.
Keep later policy changes separate from the August 18–21 automated rollout. Beginning August 30, Google changed how site-reputation manual actions affect results shown inside the European Economic Area. The policy still exists, Search Console notices can remain, and results outside the EEA can be treated differently. Did Google target AI-generated content?
Google did not say the August update specifically targeted AI-written pages. Its broader guidance says appropriate use of AI or automation is not against its guidelines. The risk is using automation, people or both to produce large amounts of unoriginal content mainly to manipulate rankings. Ask whether a page has a distinct reader job, original evidence, accurate claims, meaningful editorial judgment and a reason to exist beyond capturing another query variant.
Do not submit a reconsideration request without a manual action
A reconsideration request addresses a manual action after the underlying problem has been corrected. Security issues use their own review process. Neither route is an appeal for an automated ranking change. Check the relevant Search Console report first.
Do not disavow links by default

Fix, validate and monitor without promising recovery
Google says compliant changes may help after automated systems learn over a period of months that a site follows its spam policies. That is a possibility, not a deadline or guarantee. Monitor implementation evidence, query groups and business outcomes rather than checking one keyword every day.

Keep one recovery decision log
For every action, record the affected URL set, suspected issue, evidence, owner, deployment date, validation method and result. Also record what remains unchanged as a control. This is how you separate a correction from a coincidental movement.
When an independent diagnosis is justified
If the loss crosses technical, content, authority and policy boundaries—or affects important lead and revenue pages—an SEO ranking-drop diagnosis should produce a prioritized evidence and testing plan. It should not promise that one rewrite, disavow file or future update will restore previous rankings.
